KardaForge is a biotechnology-driven initiative that focuses on biomining to extract and recover critical metals from electronic waste (e-waste), addressing one of the world's fastest-growing environmental and technological challenges. Inspired by the Kardashev Scale, which measures a civilization's advancement based on its energy consumption, KardaForge highlights the pivotal role of access to metals like lithium and rare earth elements in powering AI data centers, electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, and other advanced technologies. Current recycling methods for e-waste are costly, energy-intensive, and harmful to the environment, leaving a significant gap in sustainable supply. To solve this, KardaForge is developing processes that harness microorganisms to produce biological lixiviants capable of dissolving and leaching valuable metals from shredded circuit boards and other e-waste. The dissolved metals are then separated, purified, and recovered for reuse. This innovative process has already been validated at the laboratory scale at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia using milled printed circuit boards. However, further optimization and scaling are necessary to advance from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3 to TRL 4, which is the current focus of the project. By transforming waste into critical resources, KardaForge aims to promote sustainable recycling, reduce environmental harm, and ensure humanity's technological progress toward higher stages of development on the Kardashev Scale.
