About Lighter

Lighter is a decentralised exchange running on its own zero-knowledge rollup anchored to Ethereum. It offers both perpetual futures and, since December 2025, genuine spot trading. Spot is permissible in principle, so this is a mixed business, but the balance is extreme: roughly 2 million dollars of daily spot volume against around 39 billion dollars of monthly perpetual volume. Under Sharlife's methodology a decentralised exchange offering margin and derivatives trading is non-compliant, and the business activity test applied to mixed projects resolves clearly against Lighter. Beyond the derivatives themselves, the liquidity pool pays depositors to absorb traders' losses and act as an insurance reserve, an experimental pool supports leveraged bets on tokens that do not yet exist, and a revenue-sharing arrangement with Circle brings interest earned on USDC reserves into protocol income. LIT carries the ruling directly, and notably none of its utilities attach to the spot exchange: staking it is the required key to the liquidity pool, buybacks are funded by derivatives revenue and reserve interest, and holders vote on how much leverage the platform offers. This is a settled ruling based on openly published information.
