PAX Gold (PAXG) is a gold-backed cryptocurrency created by Paxos in September 2019 to make gold more accessible, divisible, and tradable. Built as an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, each PAXG represents one fine troy ounce of a London Good Delivery gold bar, stored securely in LBMA-accredited vaults in London under the custody of the Paxos Trust Company. This structure enables investors to own physical gold in a digital form, offering fractional ownership with near-instant settlement and eliminating settlement or credit risk commonly associated with traditional gold trading. PAXG combines the stability of gold with the flexibility of blockchain, making it easy to trade, transfer, or redeem for physical bullion, unallocated gold, or fiat currency. Holders can even verify their ownership by checking the serial number and details of the specific gold bar linked to their tokens.
